Smart Flood Detection Barrier for Bridges
Description:
The Smart Flood Detection Barrier for Bridges is a functional student model designed to demonstrate an automated safety system for bridges during floods. The model is built on a 40×50 cm platform using lightweight foam board or sun board. It features a motorized barrier gate that lifts automatically when a simulated high water level is detected, using a push button as input.
A gear motor, powered through a motor driver module, operates the barrier arm. Limit switches are placed at the top and bottom ends to automatically stop the motor when the barrier reaches its maximum open or closed position. This replicates a real-time flood response system, preventing vehicles from crossing unsafe bridges during floods.
The project is easy to demonstrate, compact in size, and an excellent tool to teach students about automation, motor control, and public safety systems.
Working Mechanism:
- Power System:
- A 2-pin top connected to a power supply board delivers regulated voltage to Arduino, relay, and pump.
- Flood Simulation & Detection:
- Flood detection is simulated using a push button or water sensor.
- The signal is read by the Arduino UNO, triggering the emergency action.
- Barrier Activation:
- A relay module activates the AC pump or barrier mechanism.
- Using a motor (or pump with lifting setup), the barrier lifts using silk wire connected through 12mm transparent tube and L-bend support.
- Display & Alerts:
- The LCD with I2C shows the current status (“Barrier Up”, “Flood Detected”, etc.)
- Optionally, the GSM module sends an SMS alert to a predefined number using SIM800L.
- Reset Function:
- Once the flood condition is cleared (button released or sensor reset), the barrier lowers automatically.
✅ Key Highlights:
- Fully functional barrier simulation
- Real-time response to simulated flood trigger
- Uses simple electronics and basic logic
- Great for school science exhibitions and STEM learning
🧩 Applications in Real Life:
- Automated flood barriers on rural and urban bridges
- Smart safety gates for railway crossings
- Entry control systems in flood-prone areas
