The HC-SR04 is a popular ultrasonic sensor widely used in robotics and various electronic projects, especially suitable for distance measuring applications. This sensor operates by emitting ultrasonic sound waves at a frequency of 40 kHz, which travel through the air and reflect off objects back to the sensor.
Here’s how the HC-SR04 sensor works:
1. **Triggering the Sensor:** The sensor is triggered by a 10-microsecond pulse sent to the trigger pin. This initiates the emission of an ultrasonic burst from the sensor.
2. **Emission of Ultrasonic Waves:** Upon receiving the trigger signal, the sensor emits a series of eight ultrasonic pulses. These pulses travel outward from the sensor at the speed of sound.
3. **Echo Reception:** After bouncing off any object in their path, the pulses return to the sensor, where they are detected by the echo pin. The duration between sending the ultrasonic burst and receiving the echo is measured.
4. **Distance Calculation:** The time it takes for the echo to be received indicates the distance to the object. Distance can be calculated using the speed of sound, knowing that sound travels at about 343 meters per second at room temperature. The formula used is:

The division by 2 accounts for the fact that the sound has to travel to the object and back to the sensor.
