A gold leaf electroscope is a simple device used to detect and measure electric charges. It consists of a metal rod connected to a thin strip of gold leaf inside a glass jar. The top of the rod usually has a metal disc or ball where a charge can be applied.

1. **Charging the Electroscope:** When a charged object touches the metal disc at the top of the electroscope, the charge is transferred to the rod and the gold leaf. Since like charges repel, the gold leaf lifts or diverges away from the rod if it receives the same type of charge.
2. **Observing Charge Effects:** The degree of divergence of the gold leaf can give a qualitative indication of the magnitude of the charge. More charge means more repulsion and a wider divergence of the leaf.
3. **Identifying Charge Type:** By bringing a known charged object near the metal disc (without touching it), you can observe the reaction of the gold leaf to determine the type of charge initially on the electroscope. If the leaf collapses towards the rod, it indicates that the charges are opposite; if it diverges further, the charges are the same.
4. **Discharging:** The electroscope can be discharged by grounding it, which involves touching the metal rod with a conductor connected to the earth. This allows the charges to flow away, causing the gold leaf to collapse back against the rod.
